We had not been able to reach our hoped-for target of £200,000 so some of the sensory activities and some additional equipment did not get included. However, there was delight at the finished result. </p><p>Invitations to attend this event had been sent out from the Mayor's office. </p><p>Some school council pupils from Adamsrill Primary School and pupils from Brent Knoll School had been invited to the opening as well as local councillors, council officers from Lewisham's parks department and managers from Glendale.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE2Bnk4Lleek-vtfho-bT4kYZjWR_s5ohrn-chRZpMmdpBtflc0flNoqVkj2ADegArSHfFrBNS2SOUy6mVP5jqWegA5tzUVpbY8G8tterYS2ZHYSgGaDMRunkhztIV4hj87MlDMNpo4I8W_5NfvPC9QqX9S4azeTP_sturzoQTblbRQvR6LQKuNdWmt08/s1354/From%20Cllr%20S%20Wise.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1354" data-original-width="619" height="441" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE2Bnk4Lleek-vtfho-bT4kYZjWR_s5ohrn-chRZpMmdpBtflc0flNoqVkj2ADegArSHfFrBNS2SOUy6mVP5jqWegA5tzUVpbY8G8tterYS2ZHYSgGaDMRunkhztIV4hj87MlDMNpo4I8W_5NfvPC9QqX9S4azeTP_sturzoQTblbRQvR6LQKuNdWmt08/w216-h441/From%20Cllr%20S%20Wise.jpg" width="216" /></a></div>Kompan is the play equipment company that had designed, built and installed the equipment. The Friends conducted two surveys, one in 2017 to find out if there would be support for a playground improvement campaign and a second survey in 2022 to ensure we were still campaigning with support from parents and children.</span></div><p></p><p>This playground could not have been completed without time and effort from the parks department and from Glendale (the parks management company) helping us. There were quite a few meetings along the way. Then came Covid and lockdowns which meant our campaign came to a halt and finally we had to pick up from where we had left off previously. </p>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-27685470228226352702024-03-16T19:35:00.000+00:002024-03-16T19:35:18.374+00:00GREEN SPACES NEED FRIENDS <p> Following on from my recent blog, here is a chart from Dave Morris, Chair of the National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces.</p><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: #b6d7a8;">GREEN SPACES NEED FRIENDS! - The why, what and how of Friends Groups</span><figure class="image-right" style="border-radius: 0px; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; clear: right; display: table; float: right; font-family: arial, Arial, sans-serif; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-alternates: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-variant-position: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem 1rem; max-width: 50%; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="background-color: #b6d7a8;"><img alt="Logo: National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces" data-image="nxm3ywzvvra5" height="92" src="https://www.countryside-jobs.com/Focus/Images/NFPGS.jpg" style="border-radius: 0px; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font: inherit; height: auto; margin: 0px; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" title="Logo: National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces" width="230" /></span></figure><span style="background-color: #b6d7a8;"><br /></span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhusPLzj0xSg-eWLe58R79OwKJmzWLaHOYbIU_FYzK17gFPqucyObyLlQcJk5HH7ZDDw61VzA8D84o4h-W2rL5isvPUJYLZq8R4INxI2pPz1tRA6WYNyFppObawPn9u7CwRMMGit8Zt7JJ3Lm42Kx2XRqmcRjHWPoQlNfcof32229Dhpwdfyryd_Z9Oy9A" style="background-color: #6aa84f; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3507" data-original-width="2480" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhusPLzj0xSg-eWLe58R79OwKJmzWLaHOYbIU_FYzK17gFPqucyObyLlQcJk5HH7ZDDw61VzA8D84o4h-W2rL5isvPUJYLZq8R4INxI2pPz1tRA6WYNyFppObawPn9u7CwRMMGit8Zt7JJ3Lm42Kx2XRqmcRjHWPoQlNfcof32229Dhpwdfyryd_Z9Oy9A=w453-h640" width="453" /></a></div>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-8790048582247026002024-03-09T19:10:00.003+00:002024-03-09T19:16:07.175+00:00FRIENDS OF PARKS GROUPS AND PARK IMPROVEMENTS<p> ACTIVE FRIENDS OF PARKS GROUPS REALLY DO HELP
TO IMPROVE LOCAL PARKS </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Sydenham locals may be aware that our parks are currently managed by Glendale, the park management contractors for the land owner - London Borough of Lewisham. Parks are essential open spaces for people to come and relax, to socialise, to be active, to enjoy the flora and fauna. </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: arial;">So, how does having a Friends group fit into that scheme? In no particular order, here are some reasons:</span></span></p><ul style="text-align: left;" type="disc"><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Friends of parks groups can help to <b>influence decisions</b> about their parks and support long-term improvements</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Communications with parks contractors and the Council</b>: Regular park users are in the park most days - they know what works and what the problems are. They pass on information to those who manage the park to ensure improvements.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Diverse interest groups</b>: Friends group members have many different ideas which could be relevant in our endeavours to ensure our park includes a wide range of interest groups e.g.people with dogs, children and young people, families, sports groups, wildlife enthusiasts, gardeners. They can represent the broad views of other park users.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Campaigning:</b> Parks throughout the country have suffered for many years from reduced budgets and investment. There are even examples where councils have 'sold off' parts of parks. Friends groups can campaign within their community and beyond to raise awareness of threats to parks.</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: arial;">NETWORKING FOR FRIENDS GROUPS - </span><span style="font-family: arial;">Here are a few networks:</span></div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Lewisham Green Spaces Forum</b> provides opportunities for Friends of Parks representatives within the borough to share their concerns about their parks and to shout about their achievements so their parks can be the best they can be. Lewisham forum members arrange meetings with senior managers at Greenscene - the parks department. Members communicate by email and WhatsApp. Such communications enable the groups to share information.</span></li></ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>London Friends of Greenspaces Network</b> (LFGN) is a London-wide network providing support and advice to groups campaigning on specific issues. It also provides a regular e-newsletter. Check out their website on www.lfgn.org.uk </span></li></ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial;">The <b>National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces</b> is the national umbrella organisation to support Friends groups and help with campaigns. Some years ago theyr produced an informative resource, still available, called 'Let's be Friends'. Visit their website, click on Resources and scroll down to 'Let's be Friends' (pdf). https://natfedparks.org.uk</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: arial;">In urban Sydenham we are fortunate to have lovely green spaces. The important role played by Friends groups in ensuring quality care should not be underestimated. If you have a park that you enjoy visiting then support your local Friends of Park group. No such group? Then get together with other park users and start one. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzlr44Ou5Cf4UIEVgLT7QY2mZ3VOVdJMEv6Fyks6ov8yAucAr5BJ1Xt_loP50ugbyV8c7Eq7Xf1Xg2gfuMTeNO-w67r4wH-uxHCpv6-IzsqHxaKavzkFA0oSEmLz264BMv79D55jesD4ITjeggusDCtP-bkD940uF4d6miBBybZ2ySptwp_LhU_mSwxUo/s1920/17Feb2024%20park%20view%20(AS).jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="1440" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzlr44Ou5Cf4UIEVgLT7QY2mZ3VOVdJMEv6Fyks6ov8yAucAr5BJ1Xt_loP50ugbyV8c7Eq7Xf1Xg2gfuMTeNO-w67r4wH-uxHCpv6-IzsqHxaKavzkFA0oSEmLz264BMv79D55jesD4ITjeggusDCtP-bkD940uF4d6miBBybZ2ySptwp_LhU_mSwxUo/s320/17Feb2024%20park%20view%20(AS).jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Park view</td></tr></tbody></table><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlWuVAKxt5R0rTlg4qyZuDF4_8M0d9EhSfKuMWpelSHj2Dme8WS-_JCQTZjctA4QzmLE2Ly8eZCDxXwn5xxDvSAXl1-eMmcsUvzzP-_3_W7olGxDy3uJwd1dcd-kEGna5P1uiDWgvC6R_pJLeOKRawnm_WaqtFd_aQfnxh4Yf3_NMU0yyI5yqT-WffVQo/s2681/2019%20July%20vista%20cropped%20(AS).JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2037" data-original-width="2681" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlWuVAKxt5R0rTlg4qyZuDF4_8M0d9EhSfKuMWpelSHj2Dme8WS-_JCQTZjctA4QzmLE2Ly8eZCDxXwn5xxDvSAXl1-eMmcsUvzzP-_3_W7olGxDy3uJwd1dcd-kEGna5P1uiDWgvC6R_pJLeOKRawnm_WaqtFd_aQfnxh4Yf3_NMU0yyI5yqT-WffVQo/s320/2019%20July%20vista%20cropped%20(AS).JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tree cover</td></tr></tbody></table></div><br /></span></div></div>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-45829888166563463472024-02-18T19:45:00.000+00:002024-02-18T19:45:02.114+00:00Orchard fruit tree pruning workshops early 2024<p>We held FOUR fruit tree pruning workshops in the Mayow Park orchard starting end of January and with our last session on 10th Feb 2024. Why four? A number of people asked to take part and we chose dates to accommodate them. This gave us small working groups so we got to share our skills and knowledge. Some people had no previous pruning experience and others had a lot. Some people were surprised to learn that it is best to prune stone fruit (cherries, plums etc) in summer as winter pruning can make them more susceptible to silver leaf fungal infections. All sessions were led by Alona.</p><p>We started by looking at tools, how we use them safely and tool care; anvil and bypass secateurs, telescopic fruit tree pruners, loppers, saws. We shared info on hygiene when pruning and why mulching our trees is a good idea. </p><p>We looked closely at some of the trees to check for 3 Ds (dead, damaged, diseased), and 2 Cs (crossing and crowded), talking about which branches to prune and why. Then we got to work, in pairs and under supervision. </p><p>We were lucky with the weather on all four sessions; despite rain being a daily occurrence we had two dry hours each time. Thank you everyone who came along and joined in.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCW_Ocyunq8F8kqUQ2mX_O4zrwNkZ3Ewj19_lHl3kaBpt1HNB_GgMfTBz3JsLWuwibwlXXi43xGY6uEKfWjMhrLHGAx1D0XuA1qe4V-eVRYht0gzEO0uhZ6BB0Y6i4wydCm8vWZ9fEmH4RAlCV0MkYtWrxoDjBVjfCECYtBa3QKbvWDXHzAmtd7SL_aRU/s1920/27Jan%20Susan%20&%20Janet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; Such opposite views are bound to happen as parents recall the previous facilities and decide in their minds what they would have chosen. </p><p>There were several playground improvement consultations with park users over the six years from 2017 when parents started campaigning for better facilities: Consultations reached a couple of hundred respondents each time but could never reach all those people who visit Mayow Park with children. </p><p>A small handful of volunteers researched play equipment and play providers. One applied for funding sources with some success but not as much as they would have liked. Lewisham's parks department (the landowners) approved the campaign. When sufficient funds had been achieved, the plans went out to tender to find a firm to build the playground. This work was overseen by Glendale, the contractors who manage many of Lewisham's parks. The play provider Kompan won the tender to build the new facilities and used the outcome of the consultations to design the space within the available budget.</p><p>For those parents who are disappointed with the new facilities, it would be good to hold a special meeting to hear all opinions and see what additional improvements can be achieved. Such a meeting must be led by the interested parents, in the same way as the playground improvements project was led by parents. Concerns from these parents include apparent lack of facilities for the youngest children, not enough facilities for children with disabilities, more benches for parents and 'why mend what ain't broke'. Benches were integral to the plans but funds did not stretch far enough so further fundraising is needed. These and other concerns plus the many positive comments would be on the Agenda if such a special meeting could be convened.</p><p>Who wants to find any parents with appropriate skills to pull such a meeting together, inviting various people - parents, Council officers and park contractors as well as those with previous experience of playground improvement projects. Some of the original plans have not been included in the final design due to funding limits, so there may still be opportunities for further improvements and further fundraising. </p><p></p>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-21414671548838437512023-12-23T08:32:00.006+00:002023-12-23T08:33:14.242+00:00MAYOW PARK PLAYGROUND is open <p> In time for the school holidays, the newly rebuilt playground in Mayow Park is open. Well done to the people from Kompan, the company that won the tender to rebuild. Thanks go to Glendale, the contractor that manages the park on behalf of London Borough of Lewisham. Thank you to Lewisham's parks department for agreeing to this project. And let's remember that the project would never have got off the ground without the tenacity and determination of Friends of Mayow Park (FOMP). </p><p>FOMP volunteers with young children started a consultation process SIX years ago with other parents. This led to research into most suitable (but not necessarily cheapest) equipment to meet the needs of children - different ages, different physical and different learning needs. We visited other parks. We looked at equipment from different play providers. One parent offered to work on funding applications - she had a vested interest as she lives nearby and wanted equipment for her children. The pandemic put plans on hold for two years . . . </p><p>We look forward to feedback from those older children who have waited patiently for this positive outcome.. </p><p>Toddlers up to 11 year olds will be able to climb, slide, spin, balance, explore, create imaginary stories and become pretend characters as they play in and among the new equipment. </p><p>There are still things to sort out including a few metres of missing fencing along the back where a tree fell, A bench will be added in time, which will be paid for and donated by Friends of Mayow Park. </p><p>Hopefully other issues that may arise will be small and easily sorted. </p><p>PHOTOS: Note that the four 'mushrooms', the spinner and the circus box office have been retained.<br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Fifteen pupils from year 1 to year 6, with two members of staff, came to meet Sandra and the construction team, to ask some very good questions about the facilities which would be installed. At this point they could only see a building site but some of the design plans were available on the fences. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg07ZZ1CsTF-LnnYaiDT19aO4Q-In7_mto9g8tW3IUKRXQGrk0G1_JeswJORwV3KZGB-J7MtpGk3e8BuQ6fMoNoqsN8H61wfU7Ha9i59AXDnir6HDtGkyCERBcXlKRah9xAwk4qGbMljEj4BALr3nASB2KMntlnan1_kuGmvDOvojyUYe-iCJ4Wq8-LX5Y/s2080/4%20Dec%202023%20-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2080" data-original-width="1560" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg07ZZ1CsTF-LnnYaiDT19aO4Q-In7_mto9g8tW3IUKRXQGrk0G1_JeswJORwV3KZGB-J7MtpGk3e8BuQ6fMoNoqsN8H61wfU7Ha9i59AXDnir6HDtGkyCERBcXlKRah9xAwk4qGbMljEj4BALr3nASB2KMntlnan1_kuGmvDOvojyUYe-iCJ4Wq8-LX5Y/s320/4%20Dec%202023%20-5.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmlEzWVnFeu7Sg6icUCT7ph31ZCWDEQNGr3Wd4_oSyXlnWASycMChT-j4BkLFUlw8L2hlb8dgquWT0Uau4BcWwvgIpijyYyfQ_VOoHM-mNSDhry7QPwCWbCSOUe3gYlKdiOMaOthe-obMPjjfBTwPpsOfycqLyByrecsMbyjGuX_msNrRweKuomkkhXOQ/s2080/4%20Dec%202023%20with%20Adamsrill%20-%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2080" data-original-width="1560" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmlEzWVnFeu7Sg6icUCT7ph31ZCWDEQNGr3Wd4_oSyXlnWASycMChT-j4BkLFUlw8L2hlb8dgquWT0Uau4BcWwvgIpijyYyfQ_VOoHM-mNSDhry7QPwCWbCSOUe3gYlKdiOMaOthe-obMPjjfBTwPpsOfycqLyByrecsMbyjGuX_msNrRweKuomkkhXOQ/s320/4%20Dec%202023%20with%20Adamsrill%20-%201.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><p>Above all, they wanted to know how long the rebuild would take and they were pleasantly surprised to learn that if the weather is not too harsh and if equipment safety inspections take place, then play could resume before Christmas. public spaces, it took time to build momentum and to start the funding applications
process again. That same parent with fund-raising ambitions was willing to try
again. Other parents came together to offer support but time was the real
barrier for working parents. We were fortunate that Lewisham’s park department offered
communities a funding opportunity for green spaces and children’s
facilities, using the levy they charge
developers on building developments.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">Our bid to Lewisham was successful but we
needed matched funding to achieve a whole-playground rebuild. Veolia*, the waste management company, had
funds that we were eligible to apply
for. . . And success!</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><o:p> </o:p></span>With sufficient funds sourced, Lewisham could
now approve the process for demolition and rebuild. Glendale’s managers put the
project out to tender and Kompan** won the contract. Their overall design included most of the
wishes of the parents including access for children in wheelchairs and for
children with sensory needs. Some children expressed further wishes to keep a

Six years after
Friends of Mayow Park carried out our first online and face-to-face paper
surveys on the children’s playground (started in 2017) , it looked like our dreams might actually
happen.</p><p>
</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">2017 Summer: we started our survey designed to
continue for months, no hurry, so we could reach more parents. Overwhelmingly,
a new playground was the wish. Some of the equipment (swings in particular) had
been there decades. The large wooden multi-climb<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>frame had arrived in the late 1990s and we
estimated most of the other equipment came from that time too. High time the
kids got quality equipment. Necessary repairs to some equipment were ongoing.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp4FPiIbbM7DzklhsXpY6_oyxlPfi3ZwFTlh_aZugupRgw_f-U-8Sx3tVx0YOFj8WH2dm4qnstGrZ5l3lPWld3llkmqZNcvr50kwtatJQqtEXWjiaNtQEfy1g3is_p3WzzLgr22zidosNVGWhezXeArNlUgi8pMSt15RgGeUBcT8yHK4el19r5-KLspx0/s2816/PICT2654%20Nov2017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2112" data-original-width="2816" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp4FPiIbbM7DzklhsXpY6_oyxlPfi3ZwFTlh_aZugupRgw_f-U-8Sx3tVx0YOFj8WH2dm4qnstGrZ5l3lPWld3llkmqZNcvr50kwtatJQqtEXWjiaNtQEfy1g3is_p3WzzLgr22zidosNVGWhezXeArNlUgi8pMSt15RgGeUBcT8yHK4el19r5-KLspx0/s320/PICT2654%20Nov2017.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">repairing the popular see-saw</td></tr></tbody></table><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><b>What did parents want?</b></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Activities for toddlers including imaginative
play, using sight, touch and sound</li><li><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Activities for those aged 5+ to play with

of 11 </span></li><li><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">And activities should include balancing,
climbing, swinging, pulling, sliding, sharing, twisting, jumping, a little bit
of risk-taking, a sensory trail, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>team-work,
a space to sit on the grass, seating for adults.</span></li></ul><div><b>What did the children want?</b> They wanted more of the same sorts of equipment but better and more imaginative, with space to run around.</div><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Clearly this was going to be an expensive ask.
A group of parents came together to start the process but progress was so slow
in those early stages that it seemed the project would flounder. One parent
came forward willing to apply to big funders and made a start on applications.
Quite impressive research went into applications and we had a quiet confidence
of a<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>successful<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>outcome.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">We were supported by Glendale, the firm that
manages most of Lewisham’s parks. The Glendale managers wanted us to succeed,
to be able to access funds. Lewisham’s parks department also gave advice and
help.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">But then came two years when everything stopped
. . . and we all remember the effect that Covid 19 had on communities
everywhere.</span></p><p></p>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-81117811706029824572023-09-26T11:20:00.006+01:002023-12-11T15:06:55.752+00:00Dog Show in Mayow Park - a new first for the Friends of the Park<p> <span face="Arial, sans-serif">We
had a wonderful dog show today (Sunday 24th September) in Mayow Park. It was a
real community event and the weather held out for us.</span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif">Glendale put a proper ‘ring’ up for us (well it was a fenced square but you know what I mean!) - we really appreciated their efficiency in putting it up and taking it down for us on a Sunday.</span></span><o:p></o:p></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif"><br /></span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 8.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif">Pam Mulvaney Brown, who runs the Narvik Dog Training School, came to
judge for us with her colleague and friend Kim. They were a fantastic team and
chatted to each owner before asking them to walk around the ring.</span></span><o:p></o:p></p><p style="margin-bottom: 8.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif" style="white-space-collapse: preserve;">We had around 60 entries to our five categories with the most popular being ‘Best Behaved’. The dogs in this category had to demonstrate they could run to their owner when called and then sit nicely. </span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif" style="white-space-collapse: preserve;">'Best Trick' was really fun with dogs spinning, dancing between legs and playing dead!</span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif" style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><o:p></o:p></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif" style="white-space-collapse: preserve;">I operated a slightly unreliable megaphone but it did the job and sorry if anyone got tired of hearing my voice. As well as announcing the categories, it was important for me to share that it was our first dog show and was to celebrate 30 years of Friends of Mayow Park.</span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif"><br /></span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif">We didn’t know how the timings would work out but actually we ran ahead of time as everything seemed to run smoothly. We made a small profit - nearly £150 - from the small fee to enter each category and from spectator donations. Thank you everyone.</span></span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif"><br /></span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif">Every dog who entered got at least a small rosette and some biscuit treats. The 3 winners in each category got a ‘Winner’ rosette and were entered for the 'Best in Show'. A wonderful dog called Cora won the special 'Best in Show' medal.</span></span><o:p></o:p></p>

<p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif"><br /></span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif" style="white-space-collapse: preserve;">Also thanks to Whites Pet Store who donated some treats and Best in Show prizes.</span> <span face="Arial, sans-serif" style="white-space-collapse: preserve;">It was a wonderful way to celebrate all our marvellous (and clever!) dogs in the park.</span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><o:p></o:p></p>

As Pippa says above, 30 year anniversary of FOMP. </span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif">The fledgling group started at a meeting in Sydenham Library in March 1993, with support from Lewisham Council and initially named Mayow Park Users' Group. That seems a long-forgotten time before social media. </span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif">Over the years there have been many changes in the park, mostly positive, and the group has grown thanks to the strength and influence and involvement of the local community. May that continue long into the future.</span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif">The Dog Show, the ceramic bat hunt (see a previous blog) and the bat walks have been key events for the Friends group during this year. Mayow Park has common pipistrelles living in and around the park. The evening was warm and humid, moths and other insects were flying, so we were hopeful of hearing and even seeing some of the pips of our park.</p><p>We were not disappointed. As we walked towards the orchard some excited children heard the bat calls on their bat detectors and . . . some were quick enough to see these speedy flyers. Soon adults and children spotted these small animals hunting around the orchard.</p><p>Lots of thank yous:</p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>thank you to all the people who came out on a Saturday evening</li><li>thank you to Iain for giving your time and sharing your knowledge of bats</li><li>thank you to Glendale (who manage the park on behalf of Lewisham Council) for keeping the park gates open so we could hold this event</li><li>thank you to our volunteer stewards</li></ul>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-7047728322963023672023-09-12T20:46:00.001+01:002023-09-12T20:57:33.652+01:00Bats for the Sydenham Arts - Artists' Trail<p> Friends of Mayow Park organise occasional bat walks at dusk and we have experienced excitement at seeing these flying mammals.</p><p>But never before have we had the joy of unusual bat visitors hanging out in the park for weeks at a time.</p><p>If you have visited Mayow Park recently you should have spotted some of these multi-coloured ceramic bats and wondered how they got there. </p><p>They are the work of ceramic artist Elena Howard. </p><p>Elena created a bat hunt, encouraging park users to search around the park to see how many colourful bats they can spot. And that's not all - she created characters and stories for some of the bats and a competition inviting people to be creative on a batty theme.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiqaCCFvHttkHDAOyFQ3wrNs6zAPbnPrt1hsmecaaHF-JINrIZcGvY7IPlhx51Olu6w_Dw7JHy8JxUZ0vzJEtaAFCpw_dcz8gncOTHgSLZl7oNXBqP-xDG_4g-vvXuIDVoWxeEQbSj6izx5FvZ0fOEo6bSIuCXJFVcmy9OvZB7vIBAYk-wb73ybH3y_7s/s3508/Bat%20hunt%20competition%20Aug%202023.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3508" data-original-width="2480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiqaCCFvHttkHDAOyFQ3wrNs6zAPbnPrt1hsmecaaHF-JINrIZcGvY7IPlhx51Olu6w_Dw7JHy8JxUZ0vzJEtaAFCpw_dcz8gncOTHgSLZl7oNXBqP-xDG_4g-vvXuIDVoWxeEQbSj6izx5FvZ0fOEo6bSIuCXJFVcmy9OvZB7vIBAYk-wb73ybH3y_7s/s320/Bat%20hunt%20competition%20Aug%202023.jpg" width="226" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6IIB6sRFRF1TywT7-7xung1mvUiYwcwqZisIIIYugoZsQSGXJmDyMhu1e21QyL4hOKoVycSf-M1gXFvUU2Tv0kv30s6MMO-Sx8tLuGMh6Neb-Z2BJlMp9ceAhCehnXfqMgcgXcLmGxu_pcCblQy6hA42uqVwUcGqYu3v8IWyNTguaEVL53n9J_XM_vCc/s1200/Bat%20Hunt%20publicity%20from%20Elena%20Aug2023.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="848" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6IIB6sRFRF1TywT7-7xung1mvUiYwcwqZisIIIYugoZsQSGXJmDyMhu1e21QyL4hOKoVycSf-M1gXFvUU2Tv0kv30s6MMO-Sx8tLuGMh6Neb-Z2BJlMp9ceAhCehnXfqMgcgXcLmGxu_pcCblQy6hA42uqVwUcGqYu3v8IWyNTguaEVL53n9J_XM_vCc/s320/Bat%20Hunt%20publicity%20from%20Elena%20Aug2023.jpg" width="226" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFKkb85Hbn_itC69FzbHOObEyJhxEHCdKFjmQ0YVr8NjvThpUVCxCCn574Ft3PHv4VjvzThwuRJVYSW4A-I_b5Kt_vOP86T0_QkBTII9rBnW_Biw4BOJtHEVss7TGwMVRlCi8lCqj4p182mxSsTZ51yg963jdr--fIkXpDgtpHGJIneb4z-LzxTM5ndXE/s2048/ceramic%20bat%20by%20Elena%20Howard.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1367" data-original-width="2048" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFKkb85Hbn_itC69FzbHOObEyJhxEHCdKFjmQ0YVr8NjvThpUVCxCCn574Ft3PHv4VjvzThwuRJVYSW4A-I_b5Kt_vOP86T0_QkBTII9rBnW_Biw4BOJtHEVss7TGwMVRlCi8lCqj4p182mxSsTZ51yg963jdr--fIkXpDgtpHGJIneb4z-LzxTM5ndXE/s320/ceramic%20bat%20by%20Elena%20Howard.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Although some of these bats went absent without leave shortly after arriving, most have stayed and seem quite content in their green space home. But that is just what eleven members of Bromley GoodGym did when they visited Mayow Park orchard for an evening session. </p><p>They showed such amazing team work and the trees enjoyed the attention.</p><p>In no time some members were removing tree guards and pulling up weeds, while others went off to fill two wheel barrows full of wood chips to mulch round the base of trees.</p><p>In 45 minutes they took care of SIX trees. Here are some good reasons:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The wood chips encourage mycorrhizal fungi to grow- beneficial fungi that live in the wood chips and work with the tree roots. They take sugars from the tree and give nutrients back from the soil . . . how cool is that?</li><li>Wood chip mulch holds moisture in the soil round tree roots so there is less need to water, particularly good in summer</li><li>The wood chips slow down water into the soil particularly after heavy rains, so the tree roots are not sitting in wet</li><li>They protect plant roots from extreme cold in winter</li><li>They protect plant roots from too much heat in summer</li><li>As they rot down they help improve the soil</li></ul><div>All photos are from BromleyGoodGym. cause weather worries for organisers, commonly ‘will the weather force us to
cancel?’.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">But a bat walk must factor
in the needs of bats too; they are not keen on inclement weather. They prefer
mild, still evenings with plenty of flying insects for supper.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Friday 21st
April began very wet and cold. Should we cancel the event? </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The BBC and the Met
Office offered assurances for brighter weather by the late afternoon. And that
is how it turned out.</span></p>

the event with some entertaining batty facts. He certainly knows his bats. He
brought some bat detectors to lend out to walk attendees, showing us how to set them to around 50 kHz, the frequency for the pipistrelle bats we would hear or see in Mayow Park. The detectors, not much bigger than a mobile phone, catch the sounds made by bats flying above our
heads and translate those sounds at a level that humans can hear.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Even before we started
the walk, at least one bat was detected between the pavilion and guardian oak tree which stands majestically at the
park gates.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Walking slowly in the park, first in half-light then dusk, with the trees standing as silhouettes against the fading
light, children moving with torches, an occasional bird flying past and all the
time listening for the bats: this is a magical, calming sensation.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8EioWR4x8VF19paPeXqMJ8xX1I6smwt-4rH9gcbBOhbQlEAv9ScediVXJ9esgGzfBkQkDJBIudCPpWRyb4-cu_lC2WWXVojx_frdENr7fEW_rHTReaeijf1jAP79hX4SNkdLYbUWFaefQyPtlhfECY67gdQ1YwKdq06MBGxisTLKM2Q7YS4roe4go/s3577/joining%20in%20the%20walk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3577" data-original-width="2371" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8EioWR4x8VF19paPeXqMJ8xX1I6smwt-4rH9gcbBOhbQlEAv9ScediVXJ9esgGzfBkQkDJBIudCPpWRyb4-cu_lC2WWXVojx_frdENr7fEW_rHTReaeijf1jAP79hX4SNkdLYbUWFaefQyPtlhfECY67gdQ1YwKdq06MBGxisTLKM2Q7YS4roe4go/s320/joining%20in%20the%20walk.jpg" width="212" /></a></div> on the walk<p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">The pipistrelles flew out for us at three locations along the south side of the park, along the path between Mayow Road an Recreation Road, while Venus shone down on us from high in the night sky.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">A lovely evening. Next came 'getting to know your tree' by looking for damaged, dead and diseased branches on the trees. We talked about the process of grafting scions, different rootstocks and reasons for mulching.</div><div style="text-align: left;">After the brief theory intro we visited some trees to look carefully at what should be pruned and why.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Then on to the practical pruning, in pairs. </div><div style="text-align: left;">One of the FOMP members worked on weeding round the trees and collecting mulch to lay around each tree.</div><div style="text-align: left;">The two hour sessions did not give us enough time for all the trees but those we worked on seemed very contented after.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Our regular orchard volunteers will continue pruning and mulching over the next two weeks.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; gatherings with a serious purpose.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">We aim to collect as much litter as possible – of course. But we also aim
to help wildlife living in the park by removing items that could cause them
harm including plastic debris and wet wipes. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is rubbish left by people, sometimes
carelessly, but at other times<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>perhaps assuming that someone else will clear
it up.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;"></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Our most recent event on 4th August 2022 was during the
school holiday and a great opportunity for families to join us. The weather was
warm and sunny. Ideal. We met near the cafe and agreed which areas are most in
need of litter clearance. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We got into
groups and off we went.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Our local PCSO Andrea represented the Perry Vale police and worked with
some children who were excited to see her as they know her from her visits to local schools. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi410Efnq31Qlr8y7C93T22qheL8IT2F2Hv409980PXXtTHMyN34byzXgAnAa6QInLMGqRU24Wdkv8QQ622D-1tMxWElHU46hEv5awtTX3sWZGuoivTho7Sb5riDeZWuBX2mwavKHjs6SxfkF2kK9Zv6p18XM1JmN0Y_4oHJdX4UzPbDKZ0AFxarVX9/s1080/PCSO%20Andrea%20+%20vols.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi410Efnq31Qlr8y7C93T22qheL8IT2F2Hv409980PXXtTHMyN34byzXgAnAa6QInLMGqRU24Wdkv8QQ622D-1tMxWElHU46hEv5awtTX3sWZGuoivTho7Sb5riDeZWuBX2mwavKHjs6SxfkF2kK9Zv6p18XM1JmN0Y_4oHJdX4UzPbDKZ0AFxarVX9/w400-h400/PCSO%20Andrea%20+%20vols.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">PCSO Andrea with her team of helpers</td></tr></tbody></table>

There is no dedicated area in the park for lighting a fire and cooking food. Look for the list of byelaws in the main notice board opposite Brown & Green cafe.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">In addition, park users will have noticed a lack of meaningful rain for over a month and the result is . . . the grass is tinder-dry. One small spark (from a barbecue or a cigarette) could start a fire that will spread rapidly through the grass and cause serious damage in the park.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Unfortunately in our park we frequently find that those who bring in disposable barbecues are also happy to dispose of those barbecues and food remnants beside the rubbish bins - so other people have to clear up the following morning. Oh . . . and meanwhile the foxes and other animals have a wild party, spreading the garbage around.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Today the heat across the UK broke records. London saw areas hit 40 degree heat. Fire crews across London and within the M25 were called out to tackle a number of fires in green spaces.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Let's be sensible and look after our green spaces. The message is simple - NO BARBECUES IN MAYOW PARK AT ANY TIME.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">The following photos were taken this evening and show how dry and parched the grass is.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4HUZVJlChC_JSUp7Djl3ZUBJ-3TyebSXGCYRZrPO-YgfhKbEr2sfSstM8ZzIOHT0AlCgzYmQUf40_mUXJ1u68YlnqbpG_f06bIvFF95ex6fo8p1Sr1mAmkyU65zkfFtibHw1DaBJyC_Oo-1SmMxeyuIrSWJuZoPEBp_BZpvVx0fJDqWDNm0-p3dsU/s1080/photo%201%2019-7-22.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4HUZVJlChC_JSUp7Djl3ZUBJ-3TyebSXGCYRZrPO-YgfhKbEr2sfSstM8ZzIOHT0AlCgzYmQUf40_mUXJ1u68YlnqbpG_f06bIvFF95ex6fo8p1Sr1mAmkyU65zkfFtibHw1DaBJyC_Oo-1SmMxeyuIrSWJuZoPEBp_BZpvVx0fJDqWDNm0-p3dsU/s320/photo%201%2019-7-22.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRPWylKfg1A5gZOwJS5v8av_3QqWdDLW6lCL1CbWXp5XEkGa3SUFi6bX-C-D_6UrEA98PsZp52v-DQ6rbv-Flbw2DK2gr0Ye6rN-o_M4uHyhhyFbr8EfLTLyc3t-xjfwoj_viiu2OwzXeLUfSY_NCRyy7R90W8nbDkyQEXe34cVk54x7AdeRKcHZXH/s1080/photo%202%2019-7-22.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRPWylKfg1A5gZOwJS5v8av_3QqWdDLW6lCL1CbWXp5XEkGa3SUFi6bX-C-D_6UrEA98PsZp52v-DQ6rbv-Flbw2DK2gr0Ye6rN-o_M4uHyhhyFbr8EfLTLyc3t-xjfwoj_viiu2OwzXeLUfSY_NCRyy7R90W8nbDkyQEXe34cVk54x7AdeRKcHZXH/s320/photo%202%2019-7-22.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizEkUKbL3n9w8Yn_Fh4tOWTg1fToncVxE-wqxEN-W_yTRs52eJSgVADuj8vl3PSIZqLRQzeNxyWRUp6w46XX8Kl3F4NZP0emPlkkxvMFycTHBiRW0U7cSrnt2CnfV9Vj6qcI9BoswkKdO9aTOEL4eG4QIWwty8vS4oDOwhrl58SqymqPhC_h5Funyq/s1080/photo%203%2019-7-22.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizEkUKbL3n9w8Yn_Fh4tOWTg1fToncVxE-wqxEN-W_yTRs52eJSgVADuj8vl3PSIZqLRQzeNxyWRUp6w46XX8Kl3F4NZP0emPlkkxvMFycTHBiRW0U7cSrnt2CnfV9Vj6qcI9BoswkKdO9aTOEL4eG4QIWwty8vS4oDOwhrl58SqymqPhC_h5Funyq/s320/photo%203%2019-7-22.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-56156998810249899762022-03-30T14:14:00.017+01:002022-03-30T19:28:23.872+01:00Jester takes a mini-break<p> Thanks to Tim Walker for this great blog and wonderful photos, sent in on 30th March 2022, amidst great excitement among Mayow Park users.</p><div style="text-align: left;"><p class="MsoNormal"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">It was Monday
28th March when what looked like an enormous bird of prey appeared
in Mayow Park. Eagle-eyed newspaper readers quickly identified her as Jester,
the missing falcon from London Zoo. National newspapers and TV had reported her
daring escape and subsequent sightings in various south west London locations. She
has now been absent without leave from the zoo for two weeks. It seems that after
trying many other parks, as at Wednesday, she seems happy to stay with us here in
Mayow Park. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">She is a crested
Caracara falcon, native to the Americas and is a real beauty. She seems happy
on the ground grubbing around for worms in the flower beds and across the main
field, effortlessly evading occasional crow attacks and uncontrolled dogs by
swooping up to the nearest tree. Or she’ll happily walk very close to people,
generously offering up photo opportunities. She even spent some time with the
outdoor yoga group on the main field.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">On Tuesday,
after multiple sightings had been reported, two keepers from the zoo arrived.
They spent two hours patiently observing and feeding Jester, but she warily
stayed just far away enough to evade capture. They seemed happy that she is healthy and
managing well and once she had eaten her fill they said they would come back to
try another day. She apparently is more than capable of surviving in our park
though, and the zoo asks that people please not try to feed her.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">On Wednesday zoo staff were in the park again, saying that she appears to be in good health. They are waiting on some special equipment to catch her and that could be a few days away yet. Wherever she goes, they aim to check on her daily.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span face=""Arial","sans-serif"">After three
days here perhaps she will stay long enough for the zoo to find a way to take
her home. But meanwhile, it does look as though she’s actually having a very good
time here in our lovely park. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Way from Mayow Park but a suggested starting point is down at Bell Green. It’s
not the most inspiring approach down between one end of Sainsbury’s and the B
& Q carpark, but it quite quickly feels like you are somewhere different.
Look out for the blue bridge and turn left and you are walking along next to
Pool River. It’s a small river for sure but in the summer you will see
picnickers, children and dogs paddling. Schools sometimes do pond dipping and
nature trails. A river is a river - although you are unlikely to see any
boating on this one. You might get lucky and see a variety of river birds.</span></p>
<p class="normal"><span lang="EN">You will see walkers, runners, and many cyclists
who may be planning to go all the way to Greenwich. Running to Greenwich
provides a great reward, particularly when the weather is great, as after 5
miles you stand on the bank of the River Thames (and you can always get public
transport back!). However, this blog is going to talk about an approximately 5
mile round trip from Sydenham to Ladywell. A good starting point for most,
including those with children.</span></p>

carpark at Catford but after crossing it, going through the tunnel under the
road (where you usually then find a great coffee van!), you walk past some
attractive newly built flats and you are back joining the path by the river
again.</span></p>

are paths either side of the water so you can spice things up and take a

of Ladywell near the hospital. Here there is a skateboarding area, tennis
courts, and the Good Hope Cafe with playground number 4 next to it.</span></p>

signs.)</span></p>

for on the way, including some rather nicely designed signposts. It is
certainly an attractive route, largely hidden from the urban world, with the
babbling water alongside you, also with an appealing end goal (either the Good
Hope Cafe or the River Thames). You could even take a litter picking stick and
black bag with you, especially if you are walking, as parts can unfortunately
be spoiled by litter but there are plenty of bins. There are also groups like
‘Nature Volunteering in Lewisham’ (see Facebook) who advertise clean ups. They
have one on Saturday 26th March.</span></p><p class="normal">Do enjoy and explore this route soon if you
haven’t already.</p>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276387279169620749.post-49673916538604225272021-12-19T15:46:00.006+00:002021-12-19T15:53:52.894+00:00fallen leaves<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"> It's that time of year when trees shed their leaves. The leaves turn brown and brittle. In the park children have fun gathering piles of leaves then kicking them around. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Let children enjoy this time and please send us your photos.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Park grounds staff seem to fight a losing battle trying to clear the green spaces for the public to use, particularly the paths where leaves can be a slip hazard. It can keep the park keeper busy on a cold and misty Sunday morning as happened today.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">The wonderful tall and majestic ancient oak tree guarding the cafe entrance to Mayow Park played a trick this weekend. It chose to drop all its remaining leaves almost overnight, blanketing the ground across the park entrance and in front of the cafe. The sheer volume was quite a surprise. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Not a problem for our park keeper. He took this in his stride and got to work to sweep the leaves off the public highway and into the bushes. Thank you for your effort. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi74pNqTBw4LKyWCa17gE7lG8SuXPjA8eqGdNVtQ_MG9VU2we1nFO_kP5i4iYiwJw1t5JkIayQt-MhsUZbGz2ImgzmKTR73w4eQ4yBmIh-QNufNKjVqUGpqKEgajBkZ_rRRqjHfdgnRvj5R8yXIoAoYoCujs__HeVv3HwCZJubS8c-YGvfV7geIz5-x=s1031" style="font-size: x-large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1031" data-original-width="581" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi74pNqTBw4LKyWCa17gE7lG8SuXPjA8eqGdNVtQ_MG9VU2we1nFO_kP5i4iYiwJw1t5JkIayQt-MhsUZbGz2ImgzmKTR73w4eQ4yBmIh-QNufNKjVqUGpqKEgajBkZ_rRRqjHfdgnRvj5R8yXIoAoYoCujs__HeVv3HwCZJubS8c-YGvfV7geIz5-x=w360-h640" width="360" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhl31ARmHGyf7KrRDEOP0xKk_8rukQdMp7fn6xOjTRUdOoOM7liqCnjQR0LwrA28EXNxtcLfxr9zLI5GuX27XZh6xcRG9cxTBBYn17R0cK21q-JpSiq17gyWbNpgia_rXPNKrowF1JXQ3xLqc3iGu4oae8e7f2EX0PkMEmiah5rvItVul_KZeZ4YfbF=s1031" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1031" data-original-width="581" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhl31ARmHGyf7KrRDEOP0xKk_8rukQdMp7fn6xOjTRUdOoOM7liqCnjQR0LwrA28EXNxtcLfxr9zLI5GuX27XZh6xcRG9cxTBBYn17R0cK21q-JpSiq17gyWbNpgia_rXPNKrowF1JXQ3xLqc3iGu4oae8e7f2EX0PkMEmiah5rvItVul_KZeZ4YfbF=w360-h640" width="360" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi6LGdF_LBe8IiRrY3Mp5o77U1-PD1uCFAzMRXUOBZJhotuEyR_VO3kjWb3O0W9Po6WczFC98xn-SaVxtbnQGwqvESq9gpQezyg-x_wHQzSohjQF-cznQSye7sXUG3buq62Jqh_84w509S9ZdCA7J_3ckw9FwApz-u7NEEMdzMCmF197IJHlC7gE5ew=s1031" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1031" data-original-width="581" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi6LGdF_LBe8IiRrY3Mp5o77U1-PD1uCFAzMRXUOBZJhotuEyR_VO3kjWb3O0W9Po6WczFC98xn-SaVxtbnQGwqvESq9gpQezyg-x_wHQzSohjQF-cznQSye7sXUG3buq62Jqh_84w509S9ZdCA7J_3ckw9FwApz-u7NEEMdzMCmF197IJHlC7gE5ew=w360-h640" width="360" /></a></div><br /></span></div>FOMPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04726978586040026752noreply@blogger.com0
