About us

Friends of Mayow Park is a constituted group, officially recognised by Lewisham Council. It is part of the wider movement of Friends of Parks groups in Lewisham borough, across greater London and across the country. FOMP started in 1993 as Mayow Park Users’ Group, changing to its current name in 1998.

We have an elected committee of volunteers who are keen to represent the views of park users to Lewisham Council and Glendale, the Council’s parks management contractors.

We champion the wildlife in our park and other green spaces, the historical heritage of the park and improvements to the children’s playground as well as other features of the park.

We maintain the orchard near the tennis courts as well as the herb bed and fruit bush area.

The group holds a variety of events within the park each year. We promote our events through our Facebook group ‘Friends of Mayow Park (FOMP)’.We also have Twitter and Instagram accounts.

We welcome contributions to our blog https://friendsofmayowpark.blogspot.com

THE HISTORY OF MAYOW PARK

Local Forest Hill and Sydenham historian, Steve Grindlay, has written about Mayow Park in his blog:

PAVILION TRIANGLE BEDS FOR HERBS AND FRUIT BUSHES April 2011
Work started on 7th April 2011, to transform the tired rose beds and the plant beds with wallflowers and pansies, into something more dynamic and interactive. The new space, called Pavilion Triangle, is being created by volunteers from Nature's Gym, Grow Mayow and the Friends of Mayow Park. When finished the Triangle will include the wallflowers and pansies, scented herbs and fruit bushes. A path has been created to enable park users to wander into the space and enjoy.
This space has been in the planning stage since October 2010. The design has been created by two of the park users, has gone through several modifications and received approval from Lewisham Greenscene, Glendale (who manage the park on behalf of Lewisham) and the Friends of Mayow Park.

On 14th April this first phase should be complete with new plantings and we plan to have workdays led by park users to keep the space looking good.
