ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: this will be on Saturday 30th January 2016. It will be held at the bowls green in the main cabin.
Start time 10.30 am, finish 11 am. The AGM will aim to approve the Minutes of the AGM 2015,  receive officer reports about the past year and elect officers for 2016

Austerity measures will affect our park

I've just posted this comment below on our Facebook group. I'll post more updates on this blog in the next few days.

Austerity measures imposed by central Government will impact on Lewisham's parks. Cuts in funds to local authorities will means cuts in funds to our parks. One example is that designated grass areas will be allowed to grow as meadow and have less frequent mowing. In Mayow Park we already have one meadow area. Another painful hit will be job losses, particularly park keepers. There are currently 12 park keepers but from April there will be only 6 if current plans are implemented. Our park keeper in Mayow Park is at risk of losing her job!

If there are six park keepers shared between twelve parks, the quality of the service they provide will be watered down. Glendale (manages the parks on behalf of Lewisham) has mobile teams and they will be visiting these parks regularly each day.
We should note that there are over thirty other parks in Lewisham without a park keeper and Glendale workers look after those too. But having a static park keeper  in Mayow Park on five days each week has been important to our very busy park. I wonder whether our role as park users and volunteers may change when six park keepers spend fewer hours in each of the 12 parks?
This is a difficult time for Lewisham Greenscene, for Glendale and for our park users.

WORK STARTS ON OUTDOOR GYM AND TRIM TRAIL

Tuesday 27th January 2015, an exciting day for Mayow Park and a good start to the new year . . . work starts to install the outdoor gym and trim trail.
Wind the clock back to the summer of 2014. The Friends of Mayow Park were told that there had been a successful bid for funding for fitness equipment in the park. The Friends wanted park users to be consulted so Glendale prepared a survey in late August. We had 10 days to get the survey completed. 
Some of the Friends committee, along with Tunde, who was our park keeper at that time, gave out the survey sheets to families, dog walkers, joggers, fitness fanatics, in fact anyone who said they used the park and was willing to fill in the form. People were asked what percentage of the available fund they would like to be spent on an outdoor gym and how much on a fitness trail and to mark it on a scale. When the results were in, 169 forms were counted: results 70%  outdoor gym and 30% fitness trail.

 Glendale and Lewisham sent out tenders. I don't remember the name of the firm that was finally chosen but I will ask. We will see the final outcome in about a week.

Glendales's maintenance team have been hard at work in Mayow Park

5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL:
Regular users will have seen the markings painted on the grass for the 5-a-side football pitch. This is great news. Towards the end of 2010 we were promised that a designated football area would be provided, towards the western side of the Oval.

CRICKET SQUARE

Last week the unsightly wire mesh fencing around the cricket square was replaced by chestnut paling. This still provides protection for the specially seeded grass area but looks far more attractive.

STATE OF THE GRASS VERGES

While there is support for the improvements mentioned above, there is still concern that maintenance vehicles are damanging the grass verges unnecessarily. It is understood that vehicles need to go across the grass when collecting leaves, but there is evidence of damage to the edges which could have been avoided.
